EMD in 1987 delivered to the Santa Fe eight six-axle 3600-hp cabless locomotives which carried road numbers 5510-5517. The builder classified the six-motor units as SD45-2Bs. Upon merger with the BN, the elongated roadswitchers were reassigned to the 7500 series.

4231, Class SD40-2, was built in September 1978, #776099-16, FN 776099-16, as MP 3231. It became UP 4231 on July 20, 1987, and rebuilt as B4231 on July 21, 1992. It was retired on November 22, 2000. It was rebuilt as NREX 3600. a 2GS36C-DE, in August 2011, #776099-16.

The second photo shows radical new 2GS36C genset demonstrator NREX 3600. The locomotive is powered by a pair of Cummins QSK50 diesels, each putting out 1,800 hp, for a combined total of 3,600 hp. It was built on the frame of former Union Pacific SD40-2 UPB 4231.

NREX 3600 (2GS36C-DE) ~ "2 GenSets, 3600 horsepower, C trucks, Dynamic Equipped". Online notes indicate it was built off a Union Pacific SD40-2 frame back in August 2011. Recent photos (Sept 2023) show it stenciled "LTEX" mixed in with other dead motors back at the NREX shop in Mount Vernon, IL...
