The Federal Section 5311 program provides formula funding to states for the purpose of supporting public transportation in areas with populations of less than 50,000 people. The funding formula is based on the non-urbanized population and land area of the states.

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is soliciting Applications for the Federal Transit Administration(FTA) Formula Grants for Rural Area Program (Section 5311). Up to $30 million is available in Federal funds and State matching funds.

Area Program (Section 5311) provides formula funding for the purpose of supporting public transportation in non-urbanized areas as defined by the US Census.
