NASAMS was the first application of a surface-launched AIM-120 AMRAAM (Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile). NASAMS 2 is an upgraded version of the system capable of using Link 16, which has been operational since 2007. As of 2022, NASAMS 3 is the latest upgrade.

NASAMS consists of the AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel® radar, Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace’s Fire Distribution Center, launcher, and Raytheon’s suite of effectors, including the AMRAAM® missile, AMRAAM-ER® and AIM-9X® missile. In October 2021, Raytheon unveiled a new medium-range air and missile defense radar for NASAMS called the GhostEye® MR radar.

NASAMS employs the Raytheon AMRAAM as the baseline missile, identical to the AMRAAMs used on fighter aircraft. The dual-use concept has operational advantages and reduces logistics cost. The radar and launcher elements can be deployed over a large area separated by more than 20 kilometres from the FDC, providing extended coverage with few elements.

The NASAMS uses Raytheon MPQ-64F1 Sentinel high-resolution, 3D pencil beam surveillance radar, which detects and tracks targets. The system is also fitted with a passive electro-optic and infrared sensor, hard-real-time communication network, and an embedded and standalone mission planning tool.

NASAMS has a rotating radar with low effect which guides the missile during the initial phase and until the missile’s own radar takes over. This combined with the use of passive sensor capacity and high mobility makes NASAMS a system which is mainly invisible to an opponent.”

2023年8月7日 · The missile system can engage 72 targets simultaneously in active and passive modes. The primary weapon of the system is AIM-120 advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM). Raytheon MPQ-64F1 Sentinel high-resolution, 3D pencil beam surveillance radar is fitted to the NASAMS to detect and track its targets.

Raytheon has produced and supported the NASAMS system in partnership with Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace for more than 30 years. The GhostEye MR radar can integrate with the NASAMS system. This radar will provide increased range and altitude coverage that will expand the defended-area capabilities of the NASAMS system.
