In February, 1971 a detachment of VMCJ-1 ’s EA-6As deployed over 2000 miles from Iwakuni to HMAS Norwa, a Royal Australia Navy airfield South of Sidney to support an Australian navy anti-air warfare exercise off the East coast.

Operated by both the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy between 1971 and 2019, it was derived from the A-6 Intruder airframe. The aircraft's immediate predecessor, the EA-6A, was an interim conversion of the A-6 airframe to perform electronic warfare missions during the 1960s. In 1966, work on the more advanced EA-6B commenced.

2007年2月3日 · Because the EA-6A is such a rare breed (only 27 were built) and because I have seen only one EA-6A personally up to now, I quickly recorded its bureau number (156984) on my cellphone and hoped it was the one I had seen. And it turned out to be exactly the same EA-6A that I saw at Hardwood Range in Wisconsin, US, in 1997.

The history of the EA6A program is not complete without mentioning the names of several of the key people who helped make it happen. The origin of the operational requirement dates back to 1959 at least.

Det Alpha ended a successful, albeit long cruise, with a Navy Unit Commendation and 150 plus traps for most crewmembers. In April 1972, the EA-6A's of VMCJ-1 were the first Marine Corps aircraft to re-deploy in support of LINEBACKER operations.

The Navy requested support from NASA Langley to define modifications that might improve maneuver aerodynamics, high-angle-of-attack stability and control, and low-speed high-lift systems.

It was instrumental in reducing losses of Navy and USMC attack and reconnaissance aircraft to SA-2 surface-to-air missiles and radar controlled AAA, and was a key ECM support platform for the Linebacker I & II B-52 raids that ended the NVN air war.

The Grumman A-6 Intruder is a twinjet all-weather attack aircraft developed and manufactured by American aircraft company Grumman Aerospace. It was formerly operated by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps.
