The S3M was designed for users who frequently take high-speed consecutive pictures (at about 6 frames / sec.). In order to shorten the time required for film advancement and give the user the quickest possible rate, Nikon reduced the image size from 24 × 36mm to half-size (or "Cine-size" — in the case of the S3M, 24 × 17.5mm).
