The Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI) module educates perinatal nurses about obstetric triage basics—the meaning of triage in obstetrics, the nurse’s role, and the benefits of using a systematic approach to improve the process of triage and outcomes factoring in social determinants of health, health equity, and implicit bias.

The Maternal-Fetal Triage Index (MFTI) is a standardized tool for obstetrical triage with good interrater reliability. 7,8 Pregnant women are classified based on acuity using a 5-level system ranging from priority 1 (highest acuity) to priority 5 (lowest acuity).

This project provides a benchmark for quality obstetric triage and a roadmap for further exploration of the MFTI’s clinical impact. Through systematic triage, the MFTI establishes effective prioritization and safety, supports favorable health outcomes, and is becoming the standard of practice for obstetric triage.

Why did AWHONN develop an obstetric triage acuity tool? AWHONN developed the Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI) because there was no nationally-accepted obstetric acuity index in the United States until the MFTI was published in October, 2015. The goal is to improve quality and efficiency of nursing care and communication among the obstetric team.

None of the 35 birthing hospitals use a standardized education program to orient RNs to the role of the OB triage nurse. Majority of hospitals assign RNs to work in the triage area after working a designated period of time in labor and delivery; usually a minimum of one year.

2020年6月1日 · The MFTI level 2 provides examples of high-risk conditions, including decreased fetal movement and signs which could indicate preterm labor. Use of the MFTI for triage of all women presenting to a unit can assist in timely identification of women with these, and other potentially serious conditions.
