Why did AWHONN develop an obstetric triage acuity tool? AWHONN developed the Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI) because there was no nationally-accepted obstetric acuity index in the United States until the MFTI was published in October, 2015. The goal is to improve quality and efficiency of nursing care and communication among the obstetric team.
None of the 35 birthing hospitals use a standardized education program to orient RNs to the role of the OB triage nurse. Majority of hospitals assign RNs to work in the triage area after working a designated period of time in labor and delivery; usually a minimum of one year.
