Nov 4, 2014 · In my opinion old vintage axes are the best. They represent a period in time when America made the best product. They are inexpensive, easy to sharpen, hold an edge and have history. I'll put this 100 year old Kelly up against anything made today.

Nov 10, 2010 · I had an old axe that sat in the corner for quite some time. Ended up with a little surface rust. I decided that I was going to clean it up the old fashioned way - I took it out and split wood - darn thing shined right up. If you are planning on using it as well as show it - go with wax.

Nov 19, 2007 · My first suggestion is to read "An Ax to Grind" by Bernie Weisgerger. Once I started using axes, I proceeded to find everything I could, including old scouting manuals. But, without a doubt, this book is the most complete, thorough book I've ever read on the subject, including details sharpening instructions and usage techniques.

Jan 21, 2010 · Curved handles required careful selection of wood so the grain followed the curve but unfortunately, good curved handles died with the good craftsmen. It was a lot easier to mass produce axes with straight or nearly straight handles. The only straight handles on old axes were the double bit axe for obvious reasons.

Nov 21, 2021 · The old axes and mauls stay at home. I have a system that involves both hand splitting and hydraulic splitting. Early in the season before the heavier snows I head to the woods and scope out the trees that are down or that I am going to process that year.
