Few persons living in the western or central portions of Kentucky who have not traveled recently in the mountains realize what a flourishing little city is growing up on the North Fork of the Kentucky River, in Perry County. Hazard, the county seat of Perry, is 1.36 miles southeast of Lexington and 50 miles from the Virginia border.
History - City of Hazard, KY
By 1854 the post office bore the name Hazard and the town was incorporated as Hazard in 1884. When Perry County was formed founding fathers were veterans of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 who had come to this location on the North Fork of the Kentucky River where Elijah Combs settled near a salt lick beside the river.

In 1971, a 17-year-old girl was sucked out of an airplane. She fell over 10,000 feet to the ground. That's the height of about 10 Empire State Buildings.
