Laboratory trials were carried out in order to determine biological traits and predation activity of four Orius species - the paleartic Orius majusculus (Reuter), O. laevigatus (Fieber) and O. niger Wolff and the neartic O. insidiosus (Say) - using Ephes-tia kuehniella (Zeller) eggs and Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) adults as prey.
Orius are generalist predators that consume a variety of pests including mites, aphids, and small caterpillars. They are most effective for pests with life stages that inhabit flowers (such as flower thrips). Optimum conditions are temperatures over 15°C (59°F) with relative humidity over 60%.
