The Lakes of Ounianga are home to the biggest and deepest lakes of the Sahara. They extend over an area of 20 square kilometres, spanning from Ounianga Kebir (meaning large) in the west, through to Ounianga Serir (small) in the east.

2017年4月25日 · The Lakes of Ounianga are located in the northeastern region of the country of Chad in the Sahara Desert. The lakes are located in a basin in the Tibesti mountains, in a region that is hot and extremely arid, since it is located in a desert.

The first group (Ounianga Serir) has a very peculiar jagged shape, clearly seen on the official map. These lakes include characteristic strips of floating (green) reeds that reduce evaporation. Unfortunately, we were limited to views from a distance after having been chased out of the town by local women waving sticks at us.

The largest and most biologically important lake (Lake Teli, in the eastern group known as Ounianga Serir) has a surface area of 4.4km 2 and a maximum depth of 10 m. Its water is fresh, and supports an abundance of life.
