The PRR J1 was a class of 2-10-4 "Texas" type steam locomotives built between 1942 and 1944. The J1 had over 95,000 pounds-force (422.6 kN) of tractive effort, plus an additional 15,000 lbf (66.7 kN) if the booster engine was used.

Mar 3, 2025 · Personally, my favorite rumor I've heard so far is that the PRR buried a J, number 6435, which was supposedly never recorded as being sold for scrap or cut up by the PRR itself, under the Pitcairn Yard's duck under as fill in the late 50s/early 60s.

The PRR engineers prepared drawings based on the T-1 and the Altoona Shops built what would become North America's largest fleet of "Texas" type locomotives. In total the PRR's shops at Altoona, Pennsylvania would build 125 of these locomotives.

Aug 23, 2015 · Back to the previous point: While 6170 remains a mystery, a bigger mystery is the case of 6435. She was never cut-up by the railroad, nor was she sold for scrap. This is confirmed in various places, like Edson's Keystone Steam and Electric. Where is 6435? Pretty hard to hide 987 K Lbs. of PRR Texas....she'd almost have to be inside somewhere.
