Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8479, an AS-16MS built by the American Locomotive Company in June of 1952 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. ("LouisFols"; #3 of 26) WIL-ALT-65. Here is an original photo that I took while riding in a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train from Harrisburg to Altoona on 28 March 1965.

Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8604, an AS-16M road switcher built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and eventually acquired by the Florida Gulf Coast Railroad. The photographer's name, the exact date, and the location are not recorded.

Alco Road Switchers
The ALCO RS-3 is a 1,600 hp, B-B road switcher diesel-electric locomotive. It was manufactured by American Locomotive Company (ALCO) and Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) from May 1950 to August 1956, and 1,418 were produced — 1,265 for American railroads, 98 for Canadian railroads, 48 for Brazilian and 7 for Mexican railroads.

It is the only survivor of a group of five RS-3s built with a high short hood for PRR and Western Maryland Railway, and one of only a handful of surviving Conrail rebuilds where the Alco prime mover was replaced with an EMD. This unit is one of five RS-3s equipped with both dynamic brakes and a steam generator.

Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) RS-3 by American Models
The PRR purchased 121 RS-3s between 1950 and 1953, for both freight and passenger (commuter) duty. Many came with dual controls (as did # 8849) to permit operation with either long hood or short hood forward. The RS-3s were used in all regions of PRR's operations; many served for 20 years into the Conrail era.
