PSU 309 is a key component & a Deployable Special Force (DSF) unit. The PSU mission includes providing waterborne and land-based protection for shipping and critical port facilities. The unit is deployable worldwide within 96 hours of recall, the PSU also responds to domestic missions, including humanitarian assistance.

PSU 309 was the first PSU in almost five years to return to this mission. The unit provided crucial waterborne and landside security to US and Coalition forces in areas as diverse as Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and oil platforms off the Iraqi coast.

In December 2000, PSU 309 from Port Clinton, Ohio was deployed to the Middle East to provide vital force protection for U.S. Navy assets following the attack on the USS Cole.

PORT CLINTON, Ohio – U.S. Coast Guard Port Security Unit (PSU) 309 held a change of command ceremony Saturday in Port Clinton. Capt. Jason Ryan, chief of Coast Guard Pacific Area operations, presided over the ceremony where Cmdr. Kristopher Nolan relieved Cmdr. Todd Remusat as PSU 309's commanding officer.
