The New Flyer Industries XE40 is a battery-electric transit bus from New Flyer's Xcelsior line. On a full charge, the bus has a range of up to 415 kilometres (258 miles). The XE40 can be charged enroute with an OppCharge-compliant rapid charger or for extended down periods with a Combined Charging System plug-in charger.

An XE40 NG bus owned by the Toronto Transit Commission. Xcelsior CHARGE NG is New Flyer's next generation battery electric, zero-emission bus. It is lighter, simpler and has longer range with better energy recovery. It has a capacity of 32-61 passengers with 2 wheelchair locations. It is available in 35-, 40-, and 60-foot configurations.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority 4965-5024 are 2023-2024 New Flyer Industries XE40 buses. These buses run out of the Grand Avenue and Michael J. Quill garage.

CTtransit 2101-2112 are 2021 New Flyer XE40 Xcelsior CHARGE buses. These vehicles are CTtransit's first zero-emissions electric buses. The first bus to be delivered, 2101, arrived in September 2021 and was unveiled to the public in October 2021. They entered service in January 2022 in New Haven.

On June 13, 2012, the Chicago Transit Board awarded a $2.5 million contract for the purchase of two battery-electric buses to New Flyer of America, Inc. The propulsion system for the buses was built by Siemens and is powered with lithium-ion polymer batteries. The buses were delivered to CTA’s Kedzie Garage in June 2014.
