Placental and Gestational Pathology - April 2017
Efforts in the US, such as the NIH Human Placenta Project and the NICHD Placenta Atlas Tool, and large studies around the world now all include a rigorous assessment of placental pathology. The purpose of this book is to present a compre-hensive overview of the new international consensus framework for placental pathology using a concise
Placental Percentiles and Ratios — Measure the Placenta
As a general rule of thumb, any placenta weighing less than 400g at term is a small placenta. The goal of EPV is to detect these small placentas before a stillbirth occurs when action can be taken to reduce the chance of a stillbirth, instead of only after a stillbirth or other poor birth outcome.
For singleton placentas, use appendix 2A in AFIP fasicle (see attachement). For twin placentas, use appendix 4 in AFIP fasicle (see attachment). For fused disc, look up weight directly on table.

Placental weight centiles adjusted for age, parity and fetal sex
Our aim was to develop age adjusted placenta weight and birth weight to placenta weight ratio reference curves that are stratified by maternal parity and fetal sex. Methods: We included singleton, non-anomalous births with a gestational age inclusive of 28 + 0 weeks to 42 + 6 weeks. Excluded were pregnancies of multiplicity, fetuses with ...

CONCLUSION: Placental weight for gestational age is an independent risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes, above and beyond the known association with birth weight. The mechanisms behind the opposing effects of placental weight z score on risk of stillbirth compared with adverse neonatal outcomes require further elucidation.
