We've achieved this by encapsulating communications between our mail server and clients with TLS on port 465. The problem lies in that port 25 must remain open and unencrypted for us to receive email from the internet, but should not allow authentication. I've tried disabling the AUTH command, but that breaks authentication on port 465, too.

The webserver's ISP/connection doesn't allow outbound port 25 unless you go through their mail servers. This is typically done for home ISPs but some business ISPs can prevent this as well. You'd have to check with them to find out if this is the case or try to telnet from your network to port 25 on the O365 submission server FQDN.

2020年12月13日 · Because the remote server has port 25 opened for incoming connections and thus outgoing traffic on port 25 needs to be blocked. Port 25 is default for SMTP. SMTP still has other ports which can be used for transfer like 465 or 587. It's most likely that sendmail used one of those TLS ports.

The simple way of explaining it is this: Dovecot handles POP3 (110, 995) and IMAP (143, 993) ports for checking mail and postfix handles the SMTP ports (25, 465, 587) for sending mail.
