The Prakrits were Middle Indo-Aryan languages spoken between about 500 B.C. and 500 A.D. The name Prakrit (prākṛta) means ‘derived’, a name contrasting with Sanskrit (saṃskṛta) ‘complete, perfected’, reflecting the fact that the Prakrit languages were considered historically secondary to, and less prestigious than, Sanskrit.

Before the modern derivatives of Sanskrit existed, a group of languages known as the Prakrits or Middle Indo-Aryan languages evolved from India’s classical language. These were the vernacular dialects of ancient times, and several of them became important literary vehicles in their own right.

This course will begin with a brief overview of the Prakrit literary tradition, and then of Prakrit grammar and metrics. We will then commence reading a selection of texts representing three main genres: lyric poetry, courtly epic, and the story.

The aesthetics of Prakrit literature had an enormous influence on Sanskrit writings, and Prakrit textual evidences by throwing light on the sociocultural forces in the ancient and medieval Indian society acted as supplementary sources of information for the reconstruction of Indian history.
