Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) has been reported to affect 1 in 10 000 pregnant women. There is limited evidence available regarding the optimal management of LDH in pregnant patients. We aimed to review the current evidence for the management of symptomatic LDH in pregnancy through critical appraisal and analysis of the available literature.

Back pain in pregnancy is common, but pain from lumbar disk herniations in pregnancy is rare. This systematic review aims to comprehensively analyse literature on lumbar disk herniation in pregnancy, focusing on risk factors, incidence, clinical presentation, and management.

However, true disc herniation is extremely rare, and the majority of patients heal without surgery. The purpose of this study was to provide an overview of conservative management strategies and delivery modes for pregnant patients suffering from lumbar disc herniation without severe neurologic deficits that would require emergency surgery.

Lumbar disc herniation is the most common spinal disorder during pregnancy and can cause permanent neurologic deficit in pregnant women. Most cases can be treated by conservative management, but operation can also be safely performed maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
