The Pennsylvania Railroad K4 was a class of 425 4-6-2 steam locomotives built between 1914 and 1928 for the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), where they served as the primary mainline passenger steam locomotives on the entire PRR system until late 1957.

2021年9月2日 · PRR jumped on the steam streamlining bandwagon in 1936 by engaging Raymond Loewy, who’d styled the GG1 electric the previous year, to give the K4 a modern look. The sheet-metal shrouding he devised carried the Belpaire firebox’s square top corners forward to house classification lights.

Between 1940 and 1941, four Pennsylvania Railroad K4 Pacifics received modern streamlined shrouding developed by acclaimed Art Deco designer, Raymond Loewy. The locomotives would spend almost a decade wearing this striking appearance as they traversed the PRR system in express passenger service.

PRR No. 3678 and No. 5338 were streamlined in 1941 for The Jeffersonian, one of the PRR's premier, all-coach trains between New York and St. Louis. They were also seen hauling the Broadway Limited (New York to Chicago), Liberty Limited (Washington to Chicago), and the Trail Blazer (New York to Chicago) occasionally.

Unlike the earlier Torpedo engine #3768, these engines had a much simpler streamlined design, consisting of a bullet nose, skyline casting, angle cab walls, pin-striping, and short 110P75 tender. The 3rd K4 model seen below, (again, an Alco Models import) represents the Streamlined Shrouding that was applied to (4) K4s in 1940. This type shrouding allowed easier access for mechanics to reach vital mechanical parts during servicing.

2025年1月25日 · Does anyone have some drawings on the streamlined and normal versions of the K4s? I want to make an aluminum model of each of the K4 variations (regular, semi-streamlined, and the full streamliner) and stick them into a wind tunnel for a college project.

2007年4月9日 · I read somewhere that the Loewy streamlined K4 was first painted tuscan, then, soon after, repainted brunswick. Only one of these was ever made. In 1940, 4 other streamlined K4’s were made from a PRR in-house design, which, to myself, as well as others, looked more elegant than the Loewy version.
