Minik, son of the renowned hunter Qisuk (ca. 1858–1898) and his wife Mannik, spent his early childhood in northern Greenland among his people, the Inughuit, the northernmost band of Greenlandic Inuit. His mother died from an epidemic shortly before 1897.

Minik's father, Qisuk, was among the first to die, and the boy was inconsolable with grief. In this strange country, without the support of kinfolk, he pleaded for his father's body to receive proper burial, with traditional rites that only he (Minik) could administer.

Born in northwestern Greenland in the 1860's, he was a tribal leader who had assisted the explorer on his earlier polar expeditions. Agreeing to participate in an anthropolical study at the museum, he and the other Inuits, including his 7-year-old son Minik, were soon felled by tuberculosis and other urban diseases.
