To simulate outdoor weathering, the QUV accelerated weathering tester exposes materials to alternating cycles of ultraviolet (UV) light and moisture at controlled, elevated temperatures. It simulates the effects of natural sunlight and artificial irradiance using special fluorescent UV lamps in the UVA, UVB, and UVC portions of the spectrum.

A QUV test chamber uses fluorescent lamps to provide a radiation spectrum centered in the ultraviolet wavelengths. Moisture is provided by forced condensation, and temperature is controlled by heaters. No direct correlation can be made between accelerated weathering duration and actual outdoor exposure duration.
