In mathematics, a real number is a number that can be used to measure a continuous one-dimensional quantity such as a distance, duration or temperature. Here, continuous means that pairs of values can have arbitrarily small differences.

The set of real numbers symbol is the Latin capital letter “R” presented with a double-struck typeface. The symbol is used in math to represent the set of real numbers. Typically, the symbol is used in an expression like this: In plain language, the expression above means that the variable x is a member of the set of real numbers.

X ∈ R doesn't mean that "x equals to R", but rather, that "x is an element of the set of real numbers R". The correct way to read this out loud would be "x is in R".

Simple Math. In R, you can use operators to perform common mathematical operations on numbers. The + operator is used to add together two values:

Intuitively, it means that for every $x \in R$, the function f will give back a value $f(x) \in R$. For example, a function $f(x)=1/x$ is only defined for those $x \in R$ Real Numbers $R$ that are different from $0$, so you should write $f: R/\{ 0 \} \rightarrow R$.
