The Royal Aircraft Factory R.E.8 is a British two-seat biplane reconnaissance and bomber aircraft of the First World War that was designed and produced at the Royal Aircraft Factory. It was also built under contract by Austin Motors, Daimler, Standard Motors, Siddeley-Deasy and the Coventry Ordnance Works.

After rectification of the tendency of early production aircraft to spin as the RFC/RAF’s most widely used type of Corps reconnaissance aircraft from 1917 it served with some 21 Squadrons and as well as the Western Front. The R.E.8 was designed to succeed the BE2C as the RFC's standard reconnaissance and artillery spotting airplane. However, it's only real advantage over the older plane was that the observer was seated behind the pilot, where he enjoyed a better view and a better field of fire for his machine gun.

The R.E.8 was designed as a replacement for the obsolete B.E.2. Armament consisted of one synchronized machine gun facing forward and a rear gunner position aft of the pilot. This was a departure from the B.E.2 design which had the gunner in front of the pilot.
