The R46 is a provincial route in Western Cape, South Africa that connects Malmesbury with Touws River, via Riebeek-Kasteel, Tulbagh and Ceres. The R46 is co-signed with the R44 between Gouda and Hermon in the Berg River valley.

The pass is traversed by the R46 road and the Ceres branch line railway, which was re-opened for use by the Ceres Rail Company and seasonally by Transnet Freight Rail in terms of an agreement between the Ceres Rail Company and Transnet in 2012.

From Cape Town, it is the shortest route to Botswana and the Kalahari. To get to Route 355, drive through Ceres and stay on R46. About 37km along, keep straight at the T-junction. The R46 turns right here to the N1. If you are driving on the N1, take the R46 Ceres turn-off left for 32km and then turn right onto the R355.

2024年7月24日 · The construction of a 6.7km greenfield road link between the Hopefield Interchange on the N7 highway and the intersection of the R45, in the direction of Wellington, and the R46 towards Riebeek Kasteel near Malmesbury is progressing well.

The wide, safe and well engineered Bothmaskloof Pass is located between the Boland towns of Malmesbury and Riebeeck Kasteel on the tarred R46 route, which descends along the southern side of the Kasteelberg through a wide U bend. The pass has history dating back to 1661 and was first recced by Pieter Van Cruythoff.

Periodic maintenance is being undertaken on the R46 between Malmesbury and Hermon from March to November 2019. This R86 million Department of Transport and Public Works project is expected to be complete by February 2020, if everything goes according to plan. Half-width construction will take place on this road with stop/ go closures.
