The YZF-R6 was introduced in 1999 as the super-sport version of YZF-R1 super bike, and as a companion to the more street-oriented YZF600R sport bike, which continued to be sold alongside the R6. The motorcycle featured Yamaha's completely new engine design capable of producing over 108 hp (81 kW) while stationary.

Produced from 1999 to 2020, the Yamaha YZF-R6 is a 599-cc street bike that spawned the supersport segment. It was the first of its class to hit a horsepower above 100 bhp, feature a ride-by-wire throttle with 6-stage TCS, and debut the YCC-T and YCC-I systems.

From what I've heard, the R6 can be used for street riding but you'll get much more enjoyment from it on track day. I'd be a hypocrite to say don't start on a supersport because I did, but I think you'd have more fun starting out on a standard or naked. Something less intimidating.
