No2 Mechanical Transport Squadron (2MT) is the Royal Air Force’s road going heavy lift capability. 2MT’s history stretches back to the Battle of Britain when the RAF Drivers transported spares and equipment between airfields.

Joint Protector is a large-scale military training exercise involving a UK-led partnership with other northern European countries known as the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF).

This Unit was formed on 16 th July 1940 as No 2 Mechanical Transport Company. It was set up in Cambridge, the offices being in Kings College and the airmen accommodated in Queens College. The earliest records held on the Unit show that the Company ran 63,700 miles and carried 1,200 tons of freight during October 1943.

Now 80 years on and 2MT Squadron remains the RAF’s road going heavy lift capability. The squadron, which is based at RAF Wittering, recently deployed to the NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission in Estonia, carrying the vital spares and supplies needed to keep the Typhoon jets flying.
