Basil Rathbone feels to me like the closest Holmes to the ACD books, while the Grenada series (Jeremy Brett) feels like the rest of it is most accurate.

Robert Downey Jr hooked me on Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch ensured I was a fan, and after reading most of the books, I can definitively state that they both have their strengths and weaknesses. I'm going to compare both RDJ films to BC's The Abominable Bride as it's set in the Victorian Era and that just makes it easier.
