In mathematics and physics, the right-hand rule is a convention and a mnemonic, utilized to define the orientation of axes in three-dimensional space and to determine the direction of the cross product of two vectors, as well as to establish the direction of the force on a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field.
3.1 Right Hand Rule – Engineering Mechanics: Statics
We use the right-hand rule when we have two of the axes and need to find the direction of the third. This is called a right-orthogonal system. The ‘ orthogonal’ part means that the three axes are all perpendicular to each other, and the’ right’ part means that ^i – × ^j – = ^k –– i ^ _ × j ^ _ = k ^ _, hence the right hand rule.
