Boeing RC-135E (USAF Tail No. #62-4137) reconnaissance aircraft, nicknamed "Rivet Amber" The "Rivet Amber" had a large Hughes phased-array radar system, weighing 35,000 pounds and costing $35 million, installed in its fuselage.

RC-135E "Rivet Amber" was at that time the most sophisticated reconnaissance plane of the US Air Force. It was converted to this configuration in 1963 to fly reconnaissance missions against the Soviet re-entry range off the Kamchatka Peninsula. On June 5, 1969, Rivet Amber departed Shemya for a flight to Fairbanks for routine maintenance.

2023年9月16日 · The one-of-a-kind RC-135E Rivet Amber took off from Shemya AFB, Alaska, June 5, 1969, enroute to Eielson AFB, Alaska, and disappeared over the Bering Sea with 19 crewmembers aboard. Six of the crew were maintainers on temporary duty from the 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Offutt.

2019年6月11日 · Rivet Amber was a one of a kind RC-135 outfitted with reconnaissance equipment that disappeared with 19 aircrew members onboard over the Bearing Sea June 5, 1969. Retired Lt. Col Kingdon Hawes, the acting squadron commander the day of the incident, gave an account of the events surrounding the loss of the aircraft.

After landing at Shemya AFB, the airplane was inspected for damage. Extensive skin damage to the tail section to include the vertical stabilizer, and areas close to the long wire High Frequency (HF) antenna tail mounts was found.
