By default, RE0 is the master routing engine while RE1 is the backup Routing Engine. You can manually change that using request chassis routing-engine master switch command. You may also check this for basic idea with Routing Engine:

As soon I swicthover the RE mastership from RE0 (still not upgraded) to RE1 (upgraded) with GRS+NSR disabled I am expecting the following situation: - RE1 will became the new master - The PFE will be automatically restarted and the new firmware will be loaded on to it. - RE1 will start to communicate with the PFE. We have experienced the "RE0 IIC Access error" on a number of our MX240s and had opened a few cases to JTAC to identify the root cause. In summary they've advised these are transient errors that can be ignored (though still a concern we get these).
