However, it was not affected by changes specific to the standard cab, such as the side panel around the windows, cab sub-base, battery box covers or the length of the short hood.

It was 65 feet, 9 ½ inches in length sporting standard Flexicoil trucks, the Spartan Cab, and EMD's now-classic road-switcher carbody.

The SD38-2 had two radiator fans and two exhaust stacks, while the SD40-2 had three radiator fans and a single turbocharger exhaust stack (changed to a flat silencer housing on later units).
