One of the most visible ways to show your Lumberjack spirit is our "Axe 'em, Jacks" hand sign. When the hand signal made its first appearance during a pep rally in fall 1979, it was instantly embraced by the student body. Since then, it has become the definitive symbol of SFA pride to generations of Lumberjacks.

Give ’em the axe! AXEperience is the university-sponsored student organization responsible for preserving and promoting the spirit and traditions that make the Lumberjack experience unique. The group strives to be the main facilitators of Lumberjack Spirit across campus, supporting SFA athletic teams both at home and away.

Decorating your axe handle is one of the very first experiences you'll have when you become a Lumberjack — and it's one you'll never forget! Each year, we distribute more than 2,000 axe handles to new students. Every decorated axe handle is a true original that reflects each student's unique personality.

In July 2022, SFA Athletics launched the Axe 'Em Experience Exchange to create a seamless marketplace transaction for student-athletes and vendors to engage in NIL opportunities. All student-athletes are automatically enrolled in the program but have the choice to opt out.
