Onyx2, codenamed Kego, is a family of visualization systems. It was developed and manufactured by SGI, and introduced in 1996 to succeed the Onyx. Onyx2 architecture is based on Origin 2000 server plus graphics hardware. In 2000, the Onyx2 was succeeded by the Onyx 3000, and it was discontinued on June 27, 2003.

Onyx is a series of visualization systems designed and manufactured by SGI, introduced in 1993 and offered in two models, deskside and rackmount, codenamed Eveready and Terminator respectively. Onyx's basic system architecture is based on the SGI Challenge servers, but with graphics hardware.

Likewise the Onyx 2 is the successor to the Onyx line of graphics workstations. They offer superior scalability ranging from 2 CPU deskside systems to large scale rackmount systems consisting of 128 CPUs in a single image system and expandung much further in high end supercomputing environments.

To build Onyx2(tm) - the world's most powerful visualization engine - SGI combined the ultimate in supercomputing and visualization technologies and then designed a way to simultaneously process 3D graphics, imaging, and video data in real time.

2021年1月15日 · Without video hardware (see InfiniteReality below) an Onyx2 is an SGI Origin 2000 server. Even the SGI documentation describes an Onyx2 as a workstation despite the fact they can be configured into 5 rack "reality monsters". That's some workstation, and a lot of noise!

Up to three complete RealityEngine2 subsystems can be installed in a single Onyx or POWER Onyx rack chassis for the ultimate in graphics performance. RealityEngine2 can be made even more flexible by adding broadcast-quality video input and output options (Sirius Video) and a multiple display option (Multi-Channel Option) to the Onyx family system.
