Square hollow sections are often used for columns, however similarly to RHS sections, they are not often used as beams due to its shape that makes it difficult to bolt to other beams and vice versa. Available as hot SHSs, made at the mill as one piece, or cold rolled SHSs are made of a flat sheet rolled at right angles and welded.

The performance of these connections can degrade over time due to the degradation of material, fatigue and fabrication as well as construction errors, which can lead to failure.
