V44 was built by AG Vulcan at their Stettin shipyard from 1914–1915, entering service on 22 July that year. V44 took part in the Battle of Jutland in 1916, and also operated in the English Channel and the Baltic.

SMS V44 was part of the German Imperial Navy’s 1914 programme of torpedo boats, ordered on the 22nd April 1914. V82 was ordered only a few months later on the 6th August 1914 in response to the outbreak of war.
