The SR 509 Completion Project builds three new miles of SR 509 and completes the unfinished SR 509 in south King County. This new four-lane highway will become an important north-south alternative to the congested I-5 corridor between Seattle and south King County.

State Route 509 (SR 509) is a 35.17-mile-long (56.60 km) state highway in the U.S. state of Washington, connecting Tacoma in Pierce County to Seattle in King County. The highway travels north from Interstate 705 (I-705) in Tacoma to SR 99 south of downtown Seattle.

Construction of the SR 509 and SR 167 expressways occurs simultaneously in stages through 2028. Tolling will be phased in as the new roads open. SR 509 Expressway: The first mile expected to open between I-5 and 24th Avenue South in SeaTac. This mile will be tolled.

WSDOT is starting construction on the SR 509, I-5 to 24th Avenue South – Expressway Project (Stage 1b) in fall 2021. This project is part of WSDOT’s effort to extend the SR 509 highway from where it currently ends by Sea-Tac International Airport to Interstate 5 (I-5).
