The SSQ-947B is an active, omni-directional sonobuoy intended to find the bearing of a submarine after it has been detected by a passive sonobuoy. The system is based on the U.S. SSQ-47 sonobuoy (see separate database entry).

DETAILS: The AN/SSQ-47B active buoy, is used to provide an accurate range to submerged targets during the final stages of an ASW prosecution. It automatically begins pinging upon water entry. It can be set to one of two depth settings: 60 or 800 feet.
