SP received their first GP9's for freight service (#5604-5621) beginning January of 1955. These 'Phase II' GP9's also debuted the trademark -- classic! -- SP five light package both front and rear, the passenger GP's had the large dual purpose 'Ash can' or 'beer barrel' signal light.

This old girl sits by the old CB&Q Keokuk passenger station. SSW GP9 3809 has been sitting derelict next to the old Union Station in Keokuk for some time. In spite of the lack of a coupler on this end the hulk was mhved to La Harpe IL by mid-2011. I shot thus loco over ten years ago when it was parked south of town....
Cotton Belt GP9 Info Page - Railfan
Cotton Belt 820 to 825 were delivered in Black Widow paint, with a small Cotton Belt Logo centered at the top of the high short hood. The stacked Cotton Belt lettering and cabside number were of a smaller script, and perhaps although Railroad Roman, not the extended font.

According to good sources, including Strapac's fantastic SP Compendium series, SSW 3648 was built in May 1959 by EMD as a model GP9, builders number 25017, SSW 827, SSW Class Z-17. In 1965 it was renumbered to SSW 3648 SP Class EF418C-2.

This page is dedicated to my favorite type of locomotive ever, the Southern Pacific GP9. The SP rostered 340 GP9's originally lettered for SP, T&NO and SSW, however, only one GP7 model was ever rostered on the entire system and that unit was an SSW GP7.

2024年12月28日 · ex SSW 3873 (GP9R), ex SSW 3651 (GP9) at PSRMA Campo, CA. Museum has another Black Widow unit lettered SD&A. The Pacific Southwest Railway Museum's newly acquired GE 70 Tonner. The locomotive was previously owned by the Modesto and Empire Traction Company.
