STS-41-B was NASA's tenth Space Shuttle mission and the fourth flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger. It launched on February 3, 1984 and landed on February 11, 1984, after deploying two communications satellites. It was also notable for including the first untethered spacewalk.

Landing occurred during the 128th orbit. This was the first Space Shuttle landing at the Kennedy Space Center. The mission featured the first untethered spacewalks, which were performed by astronauts McCandless and Stewart using Manned Maneuvering Units (MMU).

Brand, Pilot Robert L. “Hoot” Gibson, and Mission Specialists Ronald E. McNair, Robert L. Stewart, and Bruce McCandless flew an eight-day mission ending with the first return to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida.

On February 3, 1984, 36 years ago this month, the Space Shuttle Challenger launched from Kennedy Space Center on a mission known as STS-41-B. The mission produced one of the most iconic photographs of the U.S. space program—an image of astronaut Bruce McCandless II high above Earth on the first untethered spacewalk.

For the EVA Vance Brand provided intravehicular support during suit-up, monitored MMU speed and distance using Challenger's radar, and flew the orbiter, while Ronald McNair operated the Remote Manipulator System ( RMS ) mechanical arm.
