This EMD repowering of the PAs was economically unfeasible, and the remaining Santa Fe PAs retained their 244 engines. Four PA-1s previously operated by the Santa Fe were sold to Delaware and Hudson Railway in 1967. In 1974-1975, they were rebuilt for the D&H as PA-4s by Morrison Knudsen and equipped with ALCO's 251 V-12 engines. [4]

The locomotive he lovingly brought back to life has since been sold (March, 2023) to Genesee Valley Transportation of Pennsylvania, which plans to use the locomotive in excursion service.

Obtained from the Santa Fe in December of 1967 and painted in a blue version of the Santa Fe’s "Warbonnet" scheme, the four famous ALCo PA-1s were used to upgrade the power on passenger trains between Albany and Montreal.

Steinbrenner documents the ceremony for the "ALCO 6000" at Schenectady on September 18, 1946 and then more ceremonies at New York City September 22-24, 1946. The three new Santa Fe units of #51L, A, B were turned over to the New York Central for movement to Chicago on September 25, 1946.

The PA locomotives were built by a partnership of American Locomotive Company and General Electric between 1946 and 1953. They offered two models, the PA-1 initially followed by the PA-2. Both were powered by ALCo’s 16-cylinder 244 diesel engine generating 2,000 HP in the PA-1 and 2,250 in the PA-2.

2023年4月19日 · In December 1967, D&H purchased four Alco PA-1s from Santa Fe. A fifth unit was purchased from New Haven to use as a parts source. Wasting no time, the first PA out of the paint shop was D&H 18 (ex-Santa Fe 62), which made its debut the day after Christmas.

Although Santa Fe's red and silver "Warbonnet" may be the most recognized PA, there were many other notable paint schemes. Delaware & Hudson purchased four second-hand PA locomotives from Santa Fe, simply replacing their blue for Santa Fe's red.
