Shōdai Naoya (正代 直也, born November 5, 1991) is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Uto, Kumamoto. He is in the Tokitsukaze stable. He is a right hand inside-type wrestler. His highest rank is ōzeki. He has two gold stars for defeating a yokozuna and seven special prizes, six for Fighting Spirit and one for Outstanding Performance.

Shodai is a yotsu-sumo wrestler who prefers grappling techniques to pushing his opponents. His favored grip on the mawashi or belt is migi-yotsu, a left hand outside, right hand inside position. His most common winning kimarite is a straightforward yorikiri or force out.

However, this doesn't seem quite right to me.

Ex-Tokitsukaze’s exit from sumo coincides with Shōdai’s decline. I think he has bad techniques. At the start, he stands up tall to take the impact on his chest but this always puts his center of gravity way too high. He will then be off balance and just pushed backwards.

Three explanations for Shodai's recent performance: Physical--I have heard that Shodai had an in-grown toe nail during the September basho. It may have affected his performance. Attitudinal--Some people speculate that Shodai deliberately coasts, that he gets the bare minimum number of wins necessary to stay at Ozeki (8 wins every other tournament).
