In a small island off the American coast, the Whateleys live in an old mill where a mysterious bloody being creates an atmosphere of horror. After her parents get killed by lightning, young Susannah is sent to New York by her aunt Agatha, who wants her to avoid the family curse.

Susannah Kelton returns with her husband, Mike, to her childhood home on an isolated island off the New England coast to inspect an old mill she has inherited. She has not been there since she was sent to New York City after both her parents died.

About 20 years later, the girl, Susanna (Carol Lynley), has inherited the house where she was screaming as a child. It is a large mill house on a remote island. Although she has vague bad memories, and does not want to go back there, her husband, Mike, insists. Mike (Gig Young) wants to fix it up as a vacation home.
