Southern Railway 722 is a Ks-1 class 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type steam locomotive built in September 1904 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works to run on the Murphy Branch, where it hauled freight trains between Asheville and Murphy, North Carolina for the Southern Railway (SOU).

Southern Railway 2-8-0 722 was being service at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. This was the locomotive's first visit to New Orleans, and it was the first year for Southern steam excursions out of the city.

2023年5月21日 · BRYSON CITY, N.C. — The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad has announced plans to restore operation Southern Railway No. 722, a 2-8-0 built by Baldwin in 1904. Plans are to convert the locomotive from coal to oil firing in a process estimated to be completed in 2026, the railroad said in a press release.

Steam locomotive 722 pulled the first Southern Steam Excursion from New Orleans in 1971. She was painted in the same green and gold of the 4501, even though as a working steam locomotive, she never wore these colors which were reserved for the high profile Pacifics and Mountains that pulled the Southern's crack passenger trains of the era.
