Jan 1, 2025 · The AC4400CW was basically a variant of the C44-9W in that it featured AC (alternating current) traction motors instead of the more traditional DC (direct current) traction motors. Different from the traditional DCs, AC traction motors are much more simple, reliable, and easier to maintain albeit they costs far more.

One main difference between the SP AC4400’s and their UP counterparts (C44AC) is that the SP versions do not have an isolated cab. Essentially, the UP units have some additional cushioning and acoustic insulation that makes them quieter for the crews.
