The Espee's U30C's were delivered in two lots, the first 7900-7929 in 1968 being Phase II's, and the last 7930-7936 delivered in 1969 being Phase III's. The trucks were interchangable, so it was possible to see a U30C with a different truck at each end... The remaining U30C's were traded to GE for B36-7's in 1984.

Today™s train was a bit unusual because it had three big Espee General Electric units – U30C 7903 with U33C’s 8669 and 8729 – and they were all running backwards. The Southern was well-known for running its own locomotives long-hood forward, but this was a really rare sight.

The SP U30C's were purchased for use on the Kaiser Steel ore train that ran from the desert out east and south of Palm Springs and up to the steel mill in Fontana, CA next to San Bernardino. The red Kaiser Steel U30C's used on the section from the junction with SP to the mine were built to the same specs.
