Santa Fe's first Kodachrome was SD45 5394, released from San Bernardino on August 7, 1985, one day before Sacramento released SP 7551. Both wore an experimental version of the new scheme with white lettering and a four stripe noseband.

Back in August 1985, the first Kodachrome paint on the SP side of the ill-fated SPSF was applied to SD45R 7551 at Sacramento. Shown on display at CSRM a few days later. This unit was destroyed in 1989 in a wreck on Cajon. The "SP" lettering on later units was yellow and the cigar band had three stripes.
