They were used with SSW GP30's on run through freights between California and Texas. They remained as built until retired, except for SSW #5001, which was the 'prototype' for a rebuilding program, that was deemed uneconomical. #5001, was partially rebuilt in 1976, and was to become GP30E 5020.

A surprising number of rebuilt GP30's received SPSF paint - about 31% of the fleet. Unit 2724 pictured above is an early rebuild (8/81). Later units had the trim piece around the fuel filler removed and the pointed windshield flattened. The unit retains its smoke deflectors, but has lost its air intake shields. When introducted in 1961, the GP30 produced 2250 horsepower from the 567D3 prime mover, barely within the primitive wheel-slip controls of that time. EMD built a total of 948 of the versatile road-switchers in just 28 months. Santa Fe bought into the GP30 early, purchasing 35 Phase I GP30's numbered 1200-1234 in April 1962.

2005年1月31日 · I have a set of 3 Kodachrome cabooses that were released by Athearn – one is lettered SPSF, one has SP painted out, and the other has SF painted out. I don’t recall ever seeing an engine in the Kodachrome scheme on dealer shelves.
