In 2021, contractor crews working for WSDOT replaced the more than 20-year-old worn grid deck on the Montlake Bridge. They also made expansion joint and mechanical repairs so the movable span can continue to operate reliably and meet the growing multimodal traffic demands of northeast Seattle.

When first posted as such in January 1964, SR 513 started at Jct US 10 in Downtown Seattle and headed east via Madison St to 23rd Ave E, then north to the Montlake Bridge, a few blocks north of SR 520. From the Montlake Bridge, SR 513 followed Sand Point Way past the University of Washington and Sand Point to NE 125th St.
