Welcome to the course notes for STAT 200: Elementary Statistics. These notes are designed and developed by Penn State's Department of Statistics and offered as open educational resources.

In Stat 200, we use statistics to research a topic we're all interested in - ourselves. We collect data on ourselves through anonymous surveys, largely on the sort of social questions on which students have shown intense interest.

Statistical concepts and methods developed in a mathematical framework: Hypothesis testing, point estimation, confidence intervals. Neyman-Pearson theory, maximum likelihood estimation, likelihood ratio tests, Bayesian analysis. Asymptotic theory and simulation-based methods.

STAT 200 Exam Study Guides There will be two midterm exams and one cumulative final exam. **About 80% of the final will cover post Exam 2 material and about 20% will cover Exam 1 and 2 material.** See Compass for Exam schedule.

Learn principles underlying statistical methods. For instance: moments, likelihood, Bayes, sample vs population. Learn about inferential tasks. For instance: testing, estimation, confidence intervals, model selection. Learn to use models based on a few specific distributions. For instance: normal, binomial, Poisson.

This course is a follow up to Stat 100 with 3 Main Goals. Retaining the conceptual, intuitive approach of Stat 100 while learning a set of much more complex statistical methods.
