2024年10月23日 · Slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE), also known as a slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), (plural: epiphyses) is a relatively common condition affecting the physis of the proximal femur in adolescents. It is one of the commonest hip abnormalities in adolescence and is bilateral in 20-40% of cases 10.

The earliest evidence of SCFE on MRI is diffuse or globular physeal widening (6a,7a) 12. Hyperintense signal of the marrow along the physis on T2-weighted images indicates stress and edema 13.

Early diagnosis and treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is important to prevent slip progression and avoid complications. We sought to determine if MRI findings in patients with unilateral SCFE could indicate ‘pre-slip’ or predict future SCFE in the contralateral hip.

MRI signs of an imminent slip include widening of the physis, bone marrow oedema (Fig. 6), joint effusion and synovitis, 16 - 18 and may prevent further slippage as surgical intervention and stabilisation of the physis can be introduced immediately.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is occasionally used to detect physeal abnormalities where there is a high index of suspicion for SUFE, but X-rays are normal. MRI is also useful for investigating osteomyelitis and tumours.
